Dr. Coleman was born in Lynchburg Virginia. He attended The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., where he was a member of the Phi Sigma Society, devoted to the promotion of research and academic excellence in the biological sciences. Dr. Coleman graduated in 1977 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology.
He received his MD degree from the Medical College of Virginia / Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in 1981, Richmond, Va., and completed residency training in Family Medicine at the Riverside / VCU residency in 1984. After two years in private practice, Dr. Coleman returned to Riverside as Associate Director of the Family Medicine residency.
In 1993 he accepted the position of Associate Professor in the VCU Department of Family Medicine. While there, he served as Coordinator of Clinical Services for eleven years.
In 2004, he left the department to join Horizon Health Services, Inc. Dr. Coleman provides care to the community of Waverly, VA as the primary family physician at Waverly Medical Center. He also serves as Medical Director for HHS. In this capacity, Dr. Coleman supervises all provider staff, advises and assists the CEO regarding clinical policy and procedure, serves as a key member of the Management Team, and provides direct oversight of the quality improvement/assurance initiatives in place at HHS. Dr. Coleman lives in the community he serves with his wife, Sandy.
